In 2022, the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) conducted a survey to gauge community interest in the development of a skatepark on Norfolk Island, collecting 292 submissions supporting the idea, which YAC then presented to Council.
Council resolved to pursue the first steps, being concept design and community consultation, at an ordinary Council meeting on in October 2022. As a result, CONVIC Pty Ltd was selected to undertake the preliminary work and concept design, having a strong team of designers and experience working on projects in remote locations such as Lord Howe Island and Christmas Island.
CONVIC's approach brought together a mix of landscape architecture experience and specialist youth and play facility design knowledge. In early 2024, a CONVIC architect began community consultation through workshops held on-island in February 2024, while also gathering feedback through a community-wide online portal, with a follow up visit in May to present a draft design for community comment.
By July, CONVIC had released its final concept design and report, including an estimate of construction costs to enable Council to secure funding for the project. These documents can be viewed below.
