Norfolk Island Regional Council (NIRC) ran a Household Expenditure Survey (HES), launching it on 5 February 2024. The purpose of the survey was to enable the construction of an average Norfolk Island “basket of goods” to be used for ongoing measurement of inflation on Norfolk Island.
The last time the Household Expenditure Survey was done on Norfolk Island was 2014 and the data needs to be updated as spending habits have changed. Most jurisdictions do a new Household Expenditure Survey every 5-7 years.
Data was received anonymously and no individual responses were made available. The final weighted average “basket of goods” can be viewed in the final report. The information asked for is collected under the authority of the Norfolk Island Retail Price Index Act 1983 (NI).
The survey process
The survey was available online from 5 February and included two components:
- 5–11 February 2024: The expenditure diary (to record daily expenditure items each day for one week)
- 12–16 February 2024: The survey questionnaire, which asks questions about household characteristics and expenditure categories (e.g., food and beverages, transportation etc.).
Assistance with the survey was made available through contact with a NIRC staff member throught the survey period.
