European honey bees (Apis mellifera) have been a part of Norfolk Island’s environment and culture since European settlement. Bees not only provide honey but are also essential in the pollination of many plants and support the production of food on Norfolk Island. No other honey bee population in the world has fewer pests and pathogens than Norfolk Islands (J Roberts, 2022). The Norfolk Island Apiaries Act 1935 was established to regulate the bee industry and to prevent the spread of diseases in bees.
